Album Review: Rex Goudie - Under The Lights

For a while there, Canadian Idol contestant Rex Goudie seemed destined to live out the adage "always the bridesmaid, never the bride." In September 2005, Goudie took second place behind Idol winner Melissa O'Neil, then in early December released his first CD, Under The Lights, three weeks after O'Neil's debut single "Alive" hit radio and video with a bang. Truth is, Goudie's good looks and charm didn't hurt his appeal on the show, but when it comes to vocal strength and star quality, O'Neil wins that competition hands down. That said, the Newfoundland native entered the Neilson Album charts at a higher position than the Idol winner, proving that his trademark 'wrought rock' style resonates with a respectable number of Canadian fans. The success of the CD's kickoff single--an emo-waltz entitled "Run"--makes it clear just where Rex's success will most likely be found: smack dab in the arms of the teenage girls that voted for him on the show. As a result, almost half of the tracks are ballads. That said, the highlight of Under The Lights is a cover of Brad Paisley's "Whisky Lullaby," a country duet with the aforementioned O'Neil that hints at Goudie's ability to appeal to a variety of fans, from teens to lovers of traditional acoustic and beyond. There are some notable up-tempo tracks as well, including the Beatles-esque "Lie Awake" and also "Who I Am," which shows Goudie's full vocal range in the straight-ahead rock genre, the style he's clearly most suited for. Goodies: Five - B-Sides

Five are a British boy band that was put together in early 1997 by the same team who formed the Spice Girls. They enjoyed fair success worldwide, but particularly in the UK, parts of Europe, Russia, parts of Asia, Brazil, Israel and Australia. They disbanded on September 27, 2001, after selling close to 20 million records, and having 11 top ten singles and 4 top ten albums in the UK. The five members were Scott Robinson, Ritchie Neville, Jason 'J' Brown, Richard 'Abz' Breen and Sean Conlon. Four of the five original members briefly reformed the group on September 27, 2006, but only 7 months after announcing a comeback, Five made an announcement via their official website they would again disband.

Album Review: Ayla Brown - Forward

"Forward" is the debut album of singer Ayla Brown, which was released on 17 Octobe 2006.

The album was recorded in New York City, at Tonic Studios, Raw Sugar Studios and Double Deal Studios, and mixed at A-Pawling Studios by Peter Moshay, of Hall & Oates, and Mariah Carey fame. On August 25, as soon as Ayla was legally able, she raced to New York to record the 11 tracks of her debut album, with producer Jim McGregor of Double Deal Records, (founded by Wayne Laakko). One week later, it was finished.

There was speculation that the record company rushed this out to beat Taylor Hicks and Katharine McPhee to the punch, but the record needed to be finished prior to Ayla's college enrollment to meet certain NCAA compliance & eligibility requirements.

The first single to be released was a double release of "Know You Better" and "I Quit", which was released on 12 September 2006.
