The video has been one of the most watched videos on YouTube in 2008, and the most watched video of Madonna's career, with over 52 million views in just 6 months, as of 27 October 2008. "4 Minutes" is nominated for the 51st Grammy Awards under the category of Best Pop Collaboration With Vocals. The single was released on 17 March 17 2008.

The music video was filmed in London from 30 January to 2 February 2008 with Justin Timberlake and Timbaland, directed by French duo Jonas & François (Justice's "D.A.N.C.E."). According to Rolling Stone, Madonna and Justin Timberlake play superheroes tackling physical obstacles, with choreography by Jamie King. More than 50 screenshots where leaked onto the internet through various Madonna fansites three days before the premiere of the video. The screenshots feature Madonna, Justin Timberlake, and Timbaland all performing in front of a screen countin down from four minutes, as well as some shots of Madonna and Timberlake removing a piece of each other's clothing.
