Irish pop-folk boyband Reel enjoyed a brief but successful run from 2001 to 2003. The fresh-faced five-piece, consisting of Joseph (guitars/vocals), Colin (guitars/vocals), Philip (bodhran/vocals), Matthew (flute/tin whistle/vocals), and Garry (mandolin/vocals), quickly made a name for themselves with their unique blend of catchy pop melodies and traditional Irish folk influences.
Reel's breakout year was 2001, when they won the coveted Smash Hits Best Newcomer Award. This put them on the map and led to high-profile opportunities to support established Irish acts Westlife and Ronan Keating on their UK and Ireland tours. Opening for these arena-filling artists gave Reel invaluable exposure and helped grow their fanbase.
In 2002, Reel released their debut single "You Take Me Away" through Universal Music TV. The track perfectly encapsulated their signature sound, pairing an upbeat pop arrangement with lilting Celtic instrumentation to create an instantly memorable and radio-friendly song. "You Take Me Away" was written by Jurgen Eloffson and Phil Thornalley, and produced by John Holliday and Trevor Steel with additional production by Mark Jaimes and Steve Welton-Jaimes.
To promote the single, Reel shot their very first official music video. The charming, low-budget video showcases the band's youthful energy and chemistry as they perform the song together in rustic settings, leaning into their Irish roots.
The "You Take Me Away" maxi-single CD, released in the UK, included the radio edit of the song, an interview with behind-the-scenes footage from the video shoot, and a free poster. It also featured the Almighty Mix of another Reel song called "Lift Me Up". Though "You Take Me Away" failed to make a major chart impact, it was an important stepping stone in launching Reel's career.
Reel went on to release one album, the self-titled "Reel", in 2003 before the band members went their separate ways. While their time together was short, Reel left their mark with their distinctive fusion of contemporary pop and traditional Irish elements. For their dedicated fans, early releases like "You Take Me Away" remain cherished mementos of this promising band's heyday.
